The Coppo family history intertwines with the development of the City of Canelli, which in the early 1900s had already established itself as the Capital of Italy’s famous sweet sparkling wine Moscato (Muscat). The region was also rich in Barbera, but the family followed the trail of sweet bubbles for a little over a century and consolidated. Thus it is under the auspices of Moscato that at the turn of the century, founder Piero Coppo begins producing sweet sparkling wines that become a distinctive mark of ‘made in Italy’ long before Anglo-Saxon custom coined the phrase.
The evolution of sweet sparkling wines into drier wines or brut pinot noir based offerings was obvious, as was the need to measure up the Barbera to the big reds from Monferrato and Langa. The company flourishes and becomes solid as the elegant family mansion in the heart of the city testifies, with its long series of cellars tunneled out of the hillside that reveal the different geological layers of various epochs.
Literally campo del rosso, or “the redhead’s field” (in Piedmontese, “camp” means vineyard and “du rouss” means red hair), this wine takes its name from the vineyard’s very first owner: a red-headed man who was so burly he frightened the children
This wine’s name comes from the farmhouse of the estate on the Castelnuovo Calcea property called Gavelli. Following the principles of the Wine Research Team project and its innovative production protocols, Coppo created this Barbera without any added sulfites. It exalts the aromas and flavors of this variety to its full potential through a modern...
This wine is named after the vineyard owner, a lawyer. Strict, stern, and commanding, she has always been known as simply “the lawyer.” The young, vivacious wine is almost comically at odds with its serious namesake
This wine owes its name to a red apple tree that grows on top of the hill where the vineyards are cultivated. This is without a doubt the most prestigious Barbera from Coppo, and contributed substantially to the rebirth of this variety. Pomorosso, produced only during years of exceptional vintage, comes from three vineyards located in Agliano Terme. The...
Luigi, who took over the winery after his father Piero Coppo, found himself faced with a difficult period following the floods of 1948. His tenacity and determination pulled the winery through and even led to improvements in modern restructuring and adopting innovative technologies. This sparkling wine is dedicated to Luigi and to everyone who pushes...
This limited production Rosé metodo classico is made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero vinified as red wine. The remarkable finesse and delicacy of this sparkling wine comes from secondary fermentation in the bottle, made possible because of its residual sugars a fermentation method that follows the “ancestral method”. The term derives from the...
Nizza Bric del Marchese is the result of decades of experience working with the barbera variety. The production area is located in the municipality of Nizza Monferrato, very close to the border with Vinchio: it’s the geographical fulcrum of the appelation. Produced in a very limited amount of bottles, this Nizza accurately interprets the typicity of this...
Nizza Pontiselli comes from the homonym area located on the western border of the appelation area. Situated in the municipality of Agliano Terme, Pontiselli is one of the most traditional and suitable areas for the production of barbera. Produced in a very limited amount of bottles, this Nizza accurately interprets the typicity of this specific area
This “Family Reserve” Barbera comes from a single vineyard located in Castelnuovo Calcea in the heart of the Nizza wine production area, among the most beautiful vineyards that Coppo owns. This Barbera is produced in limited numbers and only during years of exceptional vintage
Costebianche is the youngest Chardonnay produced by Coppo. The wine gets its name from its vineyards, which are planted in naturally white soils of clayey-calcareous marl
Chardonnay is not, as many believe, a recent introduction to Piedmont. This grape has been present in the region since the first half of the 1800s, thanks to Filippo Asinari, Count of San Marzano and Costigliole and an important political-military figure. Upon his return from France, where he collaborated side-by-side with Napoleon, he brought home...
