The property once was known as "Pagos de la Vega de Santa Cecilia", the original name that became Vega Sicilia. Vega Sicilia is located in the heart of Old Castile, in the famous wine region of Ribera del Duero. The one hundred and twenty acres of vineyards are planted on soil composition of siliceous-calcareous and partly alluvial and grow to a height of seven hundred and fifty feet above the sea, a short distance from the river Duero, which tempers the rigors of winter and the summer heat.
In 1982, Vega Sicilia has passed the family-owned Alvarez who, with a wave of renewal, modernized the winery, restructuring it and providing it with advanced techniques. Currently the production of wine is run by the oenologist Xavier ANSAS with the advice of Pascal Chatonnet from Pomerol. The Alvarez family has another winery in Ribera del Duero, Bodegas y Viñedos Alión, and bought the winery in Tokaj Oremus in Hungary.
